Artist Statement
Clutter, the first word comes to mind after seeing my work.
For years, as a printmaker I’ve been drawn to the strange relationships between objects, How they intersect, the visual
chaos that somehow makes sense. This different perspective shapes my printmaking process, which I would describe as spontaneous yet intricate, extensive, and dynamic. It starts with me being part of a group, touring Cairo’s old streets, enabling me to contemplate an alternative perspective on the diverse layers that catches my attention. A wooden shack with an old motorcycle leaning on the side. A large window with an old woman looking at you. And next to her? A lion-shaped stuffed toy. Who decided to put that lion there?
All these images aren't just random objects piled up, they carry memories, meanings and they’re part of a larger story where details intertwine with the lives of people who live there. just as me and the group I’m with, now became part of this story. Following these narratives fuels my passion for exploration. It’s also what my art strives to highlight, as I try to capture impressions that reflect the depth of the place. On site, I draw these layered stories on lino-blocks. Then, the process continues at home, where I carve and print them in layered various compositions, mirroring the entanglements I see.
Note: If Plato came to this exhibition, he wouldn't be happy. He believed beauty lies in perfection, that artists add nothing new. Well, my friend Plato, I can't make perfect art... My art loves clutter.
